print etching, February Visit, Heart
One blustery February morning, a flock of doves settled in the maple tree just off my balcony in the Austin hill country. I quickly grabbed my camera and was rewarded with these images showing the birds fly in, settle on the bare branches and then fly away.
I manipulated the images to take them to their bare, calligraphic beauty, and created solar etching plates. Then I designed handmade paper to print on. The background white paper is a mix of cotton and flax pulp with gulf muhly grass seed heads. The middle square is an oriental pulp (gampi) that I cooked and hand beat myself. The blue that you see is in the actual paper--I used two vats (one natural bark and one died blue) to create the gradient in the paper.
I created editions of eight each of the six images at the new WPA (Woman Printmakers of Austin) print studio. This series is my labor of love. I hope you enjoy it.
This view is showing what I call "Heart" in the series. It can be sold as a series of 6 prints, or separately. The eidition size is eight. Artist's proofs my also be available.
The third photo shows other prints in this series and give you a better idea of the delicate handmade paper.
