I picked up these two hinged wooden boxes at an estate sale and immediately thought of a dozen different things a person could do with them, such as make a cabinet-of-curiosities assemblage, or use as a shadow box, or to simply paint and collage and then use as a functional art object. Or use it as a really cool and unique desk organizer or jewelry box.
But I tend to be quick with ideas and long on the follow through, so instead of hanging on to these for years feeling that I really ought to make something fabulous with them, I decided to make them available to the creative people here on Etsy and see what they end up doing with them. Not that you have to show me or anything (but it would be swell if you did).
Ah, but you want the particulars first, don't you?
Dimensions: 11" x 7.5" x 2" (280mm x 185mm x 50mm)
Depth inside the bottom section: 7/8" (22mm)
Depth inside the lid: 1/2" (13mm)
(Oops, forgot to measure the divided compartments inside; please convo me if you want more specifics, I'll be happy to get out my trusty ruler and check additional dimensions for you.)
Each box has two brass hinges and two brass clasps and very nice notched joinery, as you can see in the photos. I do not know what kind of wood they are made from, but when I did a fingernail test in a discreet corner on the inside, it did leave a small dent, so not likely a hardwood. Still, it has a fine grain and is stained a lovely reddish mahogany.
On the inside of the lid there is a yellowed paper securely glued, which says at the top "Object Register" and at the bottom, "Curtin Matheson Scientific, Inc., Houston, Texas U.S.A." There are two columns for a numbered list, with some of the spaces filled in with handwritten numbers (cryptic, eh?).
Of course you know this, but I feel obliged to say that the items placed in the box in the first photo are not included. Nor is the sculpture of the meditating man. Those are just props. However, if you are interested in those little bottles, convo me and I'll tell you more about them. It would certainly be possible to purchase some of the little bottles along with one of these boxes, but as the bottles contain (very old and dried) herbs, I probably can't ship them out of the US.
When shipping, I will enclose your box in a sealed plastic bag and place it in a slightly larger cardboard box with lots of paper stuffed around it to keep it from banging around or getting water damage should it happen to be dropped in a puddle, because you never know about these things.
Still have questions? You know what to do.
